Steel is the base of heavy equipment, household items and tools. It plays a crucial role in construction and manufacturing. However, not all steels are created equal; the kind of steel you pick for a project can significantly affect its strength and endurance.
The amount of impurities and/or additions determines the classification. This is what makes each type unique for specific applications.
Low-carbon steels, available in various forms, are the most commonly used steels by metal fabricators. They are found in beams, pipes and other structural elements. They are also suitable for welded fabrications because they can be easily shaped and formed without compromising strength or quality.
The medium-carbon steels are famous for being hard and contain the lowest carbon content, which is less than 1.75 percent. They are the best choice for cookware as well as durable tools. They’re also commonly used to create car parts and other mechanical equipment.
High-carbon steels contain more than 1.7 percent carbon. They are often used to make machine parts that require extraordinary durability and resistance to corrosion. This includes anchor bolts, rods and tools.
Alloy steels have a wide variety of useful properties that can be modified to meet the demands of the specific application. For instance, tungsten improves the strength at high temperatures and wear resistance of high-strength steels. Chromium improves ductility of stainless steels and increases their resistance to heat. Molybdenum on the other hand, improves the toughness and durability of alloy steels.
