Individuals with mental health conditions are also more likely to develop insomnia. People who go to bed with alcohol in their system may be more likely to wake early in the morning and not be able to fall back to sleep, another consequence of the rebound effect. People suffering from depression may already have disrupted circadian rhythms, and the presence of even moderate amounts of alcohol may push those rhythms further out of sync. Circadian rhythms regulate nearly all of the body’s processes, from metabolism and immunity to energy, sleep, and sexual drive, cognitive functions, and mood.

Feige et al. 70 studied AUD subjects in the third week of an inpatient treatment program. Subjects with AUD were divided into two groups based on relapse status at 3 months posttreatment. The abstaining group had lower delta power compared with the relapsing group and controls in N2 sleep. They also reported higher beta activity during REM sleep in the relapsing group compared with the abstaining group and controls.
Associated Data
- A subset of 15 of the AUD subjects was followed for a further 12 months and had significantly higher amplitudes of the average K-complex response 84.
- However, while studies into the benefits of taking a short nap have been demonstrated to improve driving performance 14, 26, 27 there have been far fewer investigations conducted specifically into the effects of coffee.
- In the study by Ekman and colleagues (1996), alcohol did not affect prolactin levels.
Moreover, 30 percent of people with persistent insomnia in the general population have reported using alcohol to help them sleep in the past year, and 67 percent of those people have reported that alcohol was effective in inducing sleep (Ancoli-Israel and Roth 2000). The neurobiological mechanism underlying alcohol’s suppression of REM sleep is unclear. One neurotransmitter considered to play an important role in REM sleep is acetylcholine (Bennington and Heller 1995).
Alcohol use and poor sleep quality: a longitudinal twin study across 36 years
- Furthermore, compared to older drivers, adolescents and younger adults (aged 16–29) are particularly susceptible due to driving inexperience and overconfidence in their driving competence 13, 14.
- It’s possible to reduce the risk of developing sleep deprivation, but it’s virtually impossible to prevent it entirely.
- However, recognition of the complexities of the relationship between alcohol and insomnia is important for several reasons.
- Cross-sectional studies suggest that for nearly half of alcohol dependent patients sleep disturbance persists for months after last use (46,47), and can last for 2 years or longer (48,49).
- The authors would like to thank all participants of the Older Finnish Twin Cohort for their time and interest in advancing scientific research.
A person can speak with a doctor to discuss the best way to treat and manage their condition. If a person chooses does alcohol help you sleep to consume alcohol, drinking in moderation several hours before bed is the best practice for avoiding sleep disturbances. 2020 research suggests that alcohol impacts the part of sleep known as rapid eye movement (REM).
Both insomnia and sleeping pill use increase with age, and alcohol is often used in conjunction with over-the-counter sleep medications (27,28). Breath alcohol concentrations are another way of quantifying alcohol levels in the body and are approximately the same as blood alcohol concentrations after a given alcohol dose. The following paragraphs describe how these measurements are used to distinguish different sleep states and sleep stages.
- Specifically, fatigue resulting from sleep deprivation has been demonstrated to increase the likelihood of lane drift 3, impair the ability to maintain a constant speed 4, 9 and increase the likelihood of involvement in a collision 10.
- This attention to sleep disorders also has sensitized investigators and clinicians to the impact that disrupted and shortened sleep has on daytime alertness.
- Rundell et al. 28 reported data only from a single central EEG site for delta, theta, and alpha activity and from a frontal site for higher frequencies.
- Acamprosate was approved by the FDA in 2004 as a medication for the treatment of AUD 257.
- Table 1 shows the distributions of the sleep and alcohol variables as well as covariates across study waves.
- Therefore, the possibility that coffee may be more effective as a countermeasure in an older population cannot be discounted.
